I had a marvellous weekend even though I was ill. I took the weekend off writing because I was ill for most of last week and just needed some down time. I hit up my local library Saturday morning, returned the books I had out, and picked up some new ones; and oh my gods my library got Stars Above by Marissa Meyer! I’m already half way through it. I’m absolutely loving the Lunar Chronicles series and I’ve managed to read all of them this year. Sci-fi is not something that I normally read, but Meyer’s melding of fairy tales and a science fiction future caught my attention. One of my early blogs on this page was a review of the first four Lunar Chronicles books (you can check it out here). Meyer has an amazing talent for writing great characters and you can’t help but get attached to them. I love Fairy Tale retellings and this was one of the most original takes on traditional Fairy Tales that I’ve come across. Sidenote: Heartless is also well worth a read. It gives a back story for Alice in Wonderland’s Queen of Hearts and is really good.
Other books I got out were A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness, which is something that’s been on my To Read list for ages, and Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor. I recently picked up Dreams of Gods and Monsters at a second-hand book shop not realising that is was book three in a series. I have a tendency of doing this. I started the Harry Potter and Twilight Series’ with books three as well XD. Anyway, I didn’t really want to start reading at book three this time, so I picked up Daughter of Smoke and Bone at the library to read first; and I absolutely loved it. It was not at all what I was expecting, and I loved the character of Karou. Karou had me wanting to pick up my sketch pad and pencils and create some art. There was one element that I thought was predictable but that element was still done well and was somewhat original in its execution. I can’t wait to finish Stars Above so I can start Days of Blood and Starlight. I really need to know what happens next. Daughter of Smoke and Blood left certain questions unanswered and I need to know!
The other thing, besides reading, that occupied most of my time this weekend was a craft project I’ve been working on. I’m really into crochet and I came across this dolly pattern that I wanted to make. It took me a few goes but I finally worked the kinks out of it and have almost finished this cute Goddess amiguri doll. This one is an ocean goddess made from left over yarn from a different project. I still need to do the arms and attach them but I’m really happy with how this turned out. This pattern taught me that hook size and yarn ply make a huge difference in the size of the finished project. The first time I tried this pattern the Goddess came out almost life size. The friend I gifted it to though was happy with that as she decided to use it as a body pillow. I’m definitely going to be making more of these in the future.
I’m hoping that this week I can get back to my regular schedule, but like I said in my last blog post, lately life has just had other ideas. Next week I’m sharing a poem with you which I hope you’ll enjoy.
What are you reading? Let me know in the comments. Or give me some Fairy Tale re-telling recommendations 😊
